Omaha doctors provide first-time parents hands-on training for everything from newborn CPR to changing diapers

New and expecting parents received hands-on skills training recently.

Educating parents on things like newborn CPR, first aid and car seat installation, Boys Town pediatricians helped parents prepare to bring their baby home.

Boys Town Pediatrics hosted their annual Newborn Care Workshop to offer training on everything from swaddling and diaper changing to newborn first aid.

For first time parents Claire and Tom Maliszewski expecting a baby boy, the event was eye opening.

"I think as first time parents just learning this information is absolutely vital. I don't think you have to be a first-time parent to come here. I think this information is great for any newborn parent," the couple said.

Workshops included tips for traveling with newborns.

"For me, one thing I learned is that you can take a car seat onto an airplane, I had no idea," said the Maliszewskis.

It also included chances for soon-to-be parents to sit down with vendors one on one and learn about different child safety products.

"There's a lot that you don't know or that you're needing to know welcoming a new baby into your family and this gives you a great way to meet with a lot of those resources one on one and ask those questions and get a lot more information to get ready for welcoming your baby," said Dr. Caitlin Gillespie.

Boys Town's goal for putting on an event such as this.

"We're here, we're a resource for any questions you might have and we're happy to answer those questions, whether that's through a meet the doc appointment with meeting with our pediatricians one on one or just getting the resources for welcoming your newborn, this is a great way to do that," said Gillespie.

For any new parents not able to attend, Gillespie said Boys Town doctors are always there to help any parents through this big step in life.

"I think the biggest things in terms of resources here are feeding and lactation support, just kind of what your feeding plan is for your baby and resources if you're having any questions about that. Other things are car seat safety and home safety as well as CPR certification and just infant first aid and safety," she said.
